9 die in India river boat race, at least 3 boats capsize

GAUHATI, India — Indian police say they have recovered at least nine bodies after three to four boats capsized in stormy conditions during a race on the Sabang river in the country's remote northeast.

Police officer Mukesh Sahay says the boats were caught in a sudden rainstorm on Sunday in Tikkri Killa, a town in Assam state.

Rescuers were also searching for several people reported missing in the accident.

He said it was not immediately clear whether the nine dead were all participants in the rowing boats race because some people when the accident happened were traveling on the same stretch of river in their motor boats.

Deadly boating accidents are common in India.

Many ferries are poorly built and overcrowded.

There is little regard for safety regulations and life jackets.
