RAJKOT, India — India declared on a record 649-9 after centuries by Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja before reducing the West Indies to 94-6 by stumps on Friday on the second day of the first test.

It was India's highest total in a test match against the West Indies, with Jadeja (100 not out) reaching his maiden hundred after Kohli departed for 139 — his 23rd test century. Prithvi Shaw, an 18-year-old debutant opener, had scored 134 on Day 1.

In the West Indies' reply, Kraigg Brathwaite (two) and Kieran Powell (one) fell to Mohammed Shami in the first five overs before India's spinners took over.

Ravichandran Ashwin bowled Shai Hope for 10, Jadeja had Sunil Ambris (12) caught at slip in his first over, and Kuldeep Yadav bowled Shane Dowrich (10). In between those wickets, Shimron Hetmyer was run out for 10 after a mix-up with Ambris.

The visitors trailed by 555 runs at the close, with Roston Chase (27 not out) and Keemo Paul (13 not out) in the middle and showing some fight.

Resuming on its overnight score of 364-4, India lost Rishabh Pant for 92 but Kohli went on to reach three figures despite it being an uncharacteristically subdued knock from the captain, who faced 230 balls in his innings.

It came to an end in the 124th over when Kohli chipped a mishit to mid-on off Sherman Lewis (2-93).

Jadeja benefited from a dropped catch when he was 1 not out and pushed India beyond 600 in the 141st over. He added a further 23 runs for the unbeaten last wicket with Shami (2 not out).
