In October 2018, San Francisco Supreme Court Judge Suzanne Bolanos rejected Monsanto’s appeal to overturn a jury verdict which found that its popular weed killer Roundup causes cancer and gave plaintiff Dewayne Johnson a final award of $78.5 million in damages. Former school groundskeeper Mr Johnson was the first cancer patient to take Monsanto to trial, claiming he got terminal cancer (non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma) from Roundup weed killer.

This class action lawsuit is believed to be only the first part of what may be a decades-long legal fight over Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate. By now, the number of glyphosate lawsuits against Monsanto has expanded to more than 8,700 cases.

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) which is the cancer-research arm of the World Health Organization announced that the world’s most widely used herbicide glyphosate is probably carcinogenic to humans, and labeled glyphosate as Group 2A. This category is designated for agents in which evidence available of carcinogenicity in humans is a bit limited at the time, but a positive link between the agent and cancer still exists. Monsanto, however, has repeatedly insisted that glyphosate is safe to use and does not cause cancer.

After decades of controversy over glyphosate safety there is now growing evidence suggesting that those who have been heavily exposed to Roundup are being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma much more often than those who have not been exposed. NHL is a type of cancer that begins in the lymph nodes and affects a type of white blood cells.

The risk of developing glyphosate related cancer is higher for those who have used the Roundup weed killer frequently, often as part of their jobs. Many of the cancer victims currently pursuing cases against Monsanto worked as farmers, landscapers, professional gardeners, or groundskeepers. These professions often require frequent and long-lasting exposure to herbicides containing glyphosate.

People who suspect that Roundup exposure may have caused them or their loved ones to suffer from cancer are encouraged to seek legal consultation in order to assess their eligibility and their options for legal action against Monsanto.
